After 11 great years as a member of the @functions

After 11 great years as a member of the @functionsmart wellness group I’m moving my training location to @melitafitnessrehab starting next week. With FS closing its Sorrento Valley location, I needed a new spot near by to train my amazing clients and MFR is the perfect fit! I’m so thankful for the opportunity @ginocinco_pt gave me so many years ago to work out of a state of the art facility along side so many wellness experts and wonderful physical therapists. I still consider FS the best physical therapy clinic in San Diego and will continue to work closely with them to keep my clients healthy and happy. How strong is strong enough? Every athlete wants

How strong is strong enough?

Every athlete wants to be strong, but what does that mean? While strong can be measured many ways depending on your sport and your goals, in the gym, most strength coaches would agree that there are certain target loads on the foundational exercises that classify an athlete as strong.

At JMP we pride ourselves on the ability of our athletes and clients to perform chin ups with an external load while maintaining good form.

So what is considered strong when it comes to chin ups? According to legendary strength coach Mike Boyle, to be considered strong, an athlete should be able to do a chin up with an external load of 0.5 x body weight for a single rep. Let’s use Olympian @joemaloy as our example.

Joe at a body weight of around 145 pounds, his goal is to do 1 rep with a 72.5 pound external load. In the video, Joe did 3 reps with an 18 pound external load. Pretty good considering that was his third set of 3 reps. I expect Joe to be there in no time. 😀

Congrats to @joemaloy taking 7th place today in a stacked field for the 56th Balboa Park 4-mile. This was the second race in the @usatf #sandiego 2021 Dirt Dog Cross Country Series.

It was fun to see everyone out for should a great event on Labor Day weekend.

It was such an honor to work with the amazing endurance athletes that @usatriathlon had assembled in @visitparkcity for the @usat_crp training camp! I really appreciate Coach @joemaloy for including me in this camp, and I learned a lot from the other amazing coaches @trimanny @cburns0 .

Here are the pictures from my first gym session that I promised. We worked on mobility, muscle activation, dynamic warm-up exercises, single leg power development and upper body med ball power exercise patterns.
